Computer
Forensics Inc. Announces Agreement with
Equivio
to Provide Software for Identifying Near-Duplicate
Files
to U.S. Legal Market
SEATTLE
January 28, 2005 Computer Forensics
Inc. (CFI), one of the nations leading providers
of computer discovery services, today announced
they have entered into a strategic alliance with
Equivio, an Israel-based software developer, in
which CFI will become the first company to offer
Equivios breakthrough near-duping
software to the U.S. legal marketplace.
Equivio
has developed software to identify "near-duplicate"
files - primarily email messages and electronic
documents - from the huge volume of files that
are produced during electronic discovery. By efficiently
detecting and grouping near-duplicate files with
Equivio's patent-pending technology, CFI can reduce
a client's electronic document processing costs
by as much as 40 percent.
"Studies
show that roughly 70 percent of documents in enterprise
environments are duplicates or near-duplicates,"
said Joan Feldman, founder and president of Seattle-based
Computer Forensics Inc. "While existing technology
allows litigation support professionals to identify
exact copies, Equivio is the among the first to
fill the need for finding near-duplicate files,
such as those that result from the common practice
of adding a superfluous 'thank you' comment to
an original email and passing it along.
According
to Feldman, the average cost is $3 per file for
collecting an electronic document or email message,
reviewing it for privilege, converting it to a
digital image, creating a database record for
it and then housing the file for future access.
If there are four additional near-duplicates that
are subjected to that same human screening, the
cost for processing what was essentially a single
document file would soar to $15 per document.
By working with CFI's team of computer discovery
professionals, the Equivio software can be used
to eliminate that processing redundancy and significantly
reduce electronic discovery costs.
"We
are delighted to join forces with Equivio because
this relationship allows us to offer our clients
expanded processing services and litigation support
assistance for their electronic discovery needs,"
said Feldman. "In addition to the substantial
cost reductions in electronic document processing
that we can now deliver, this breakthrough technology
also enables us to perform large-volume data analysis
in a much shorter time frame and to greatly lower
the risk of errors being made during e-discovery
through a more structured approach to the screening
and analysis of documents.
Equivio's
product is available for one-on-one demonstrations
at LegalTech New York 2005 at the New York Hilton
(Booth# 3302), from January 31 to February 2.
